Russia is one of the strongest contenders in the coming Olympics in Beijing and Samsung has thought of the perfect marketing strategy by announcing a Gold Plated version of Samsung SGH-D780 as the official phone for the Russia Olympic team.
The Samsung SGH-D780 boasts 2 SIM card slots, a 2 megapixel camera, 2.1 inch QVGA screen, Bluetooth, FM Radio, microSD slot and a 1200 mAh battery. All in all it is a decent phone with shiny looks. It is expected to start selling in August.
It's a good marketing for handset makers to prepare the special edition phones for the Olympic Team of any country. When it comes to Russia, a golden phone is needed. And because the Olympics involve travelling to China this year, it's neat to have a device with two SIM card slots so you could use both the domestic number and the local Chinese number.
Hence, Samsung unveiled the special D780 DuoS Gold Plated edition as the official Russian Olympic Team phone. As far as we can tell, aside from the gold plating and the Olympics logo at the back, the special edition phone is pretty much the same as the original D780 Duos. That involves 2 SIM card slots, 2 megapixel camera, 2.1-inch QVGA screen, Bluetooth support, FM Radio, microSD memory card slot and a 1200 mAh battery. In a nutshell - it's a decent mid-range candybar which now shines more than it used to.
