Mickey Mouse Mobile Phone with Apple logo?

Many questions arise from such a product. First off — is this really an official Walt Disney release, knowing that it came from China?

Secondly, why does it have the Apple logo on the upper left hand side of the phone’s casing as well as on the back?? I mean, Disney and Apple are related - but we don’t have to stress that type of product branding here!

Third — see the familiar unlocking slider on the GUI? HUwaat!!?

Gee. More to come from China!

Alcatel OT V770: Slim and Affordable

For roughly a little bit more than a hundred dollars, Alcatel, a minor player in the mobile phone industry has introduced the OT V770. The slim phone with an attractive futuristic keypad design comes with a 1.3MP camera, Bluetooth, microSD expansion and music playback.

Ah, the influx of affordable phones. This brings into question whether consumers will buy phones because they are cheap regardless of who made them, or because a reputable phone brand manufactured a cheap phone (”oh finally, Motorola came up with a cheap version of so and so … it SHOULD be good).

Are you a brand loyalist when it comes to mobile phones? Does “selling it cheap” make a phone more tempting regardless of who made them? Or do you pay top dollar regardless of the brand and features?

Sony Ericsson P1

The Sony Ericsson P1 is the follow up from the chic M600 series of smartphones with keypads resembling Blackberrys. I guess Sony Ericsson has rebranded the design to fit a more corporate market bringing in much of the same we’ve seen from the previous model.

Here are some of the highlighted features

* rumored 312 MHz processor
* 160MB of internal memory plus M2 expansion options
* 64MB of RAM
* 3.15 megapixel camera with flash
* Bluetooth 2.0
* IrDA (wow they still support this?!)
* WLAN
* UMTS / 3G support

If SE wants to improve the value of the P1 line, they would have to work on making the device much more responsive. Similar devices that offer such services have been built smaller and faster. The M600 line was sadly, too slow depiste the good feature set.

Sony Ericsson T303

I’ve just had an epiphany. When we talk of “entry level phones” in 2008, we’re referring to phones that don’t have expansion slots. So looks and features are really givens in today’s entry level market.

The Sony Ericsson T303 comes with a 1.3MP camera, FM radio, Bluetooth and music playback software. These are, in essence, the bare essentials you would expect to find in any phone nowadays. There are versions for Europe as well as Asia, differentiating only with an “a” or “c” naming convention.

The “it” factor has to be its form. You can check out more photos of the T303 over here.

P.S. Here’s an observation. Notice the T303’s default wallpaper? Looks a lot like the default designs of one of the previous Nokia fashion phone lines. The one where they used squares with rounded edges. Anyone remember those models?

Nokia 8800 Arte

The Nokia 8800 Arte is the latest in Nokia’s fashion line. There are two available units, the Nokia 8800 Arte and the Nokia 8800 Sapphire Arte, with the main difference being that the latter comes with a leather slider. In terms of features, aside from the elegance of both units as fashion phones, the Arte displays a status menu of the time and missed events by tapping the metal bar at the bottom of the screen. The phone also comes with motion sensitive gestures like tilting the phone downwards to turn it to silent mode.

Affluence has taken another step with the 8800. What used to cost an arm and a leg now costs an arm, a leg, and a kidney. That’s US $640.00 off your payroll. The phone casing is plated with 24k gold (hard to believe but still …) .

I have an idea. It involves some smelting.

You are bidding on a BRAND NEW Nokia 8800, the latest, most stylish phone to date from Nokia. It has everything from bluetooth to scratch resistant glass on the screen and exudes quality from every surface.

Weight at 134g means it is a lightweight with a big punch. further to the above spec it has 64mb of on board memory, a 262,000 colour display and comes complete with case, two batteries and a desktop stand.

HTC Touch Dual Review (with a 2006 Flashback!)

It’s really been bugging me. When I set my eyes on the cool and slick real estate of the HTC Touch Dual, I experienced one of those moments that could only be described as an epiphany - finally understanding that thing that has been bugging me at the back of my head. The HTC Touch Dual reminds me of a device that didn’t sell very well and yet was almost brilliant enough to change the way Windows Mobile smartphones were developed. And I’m talking about a blast from the past — the O2 XDA Stealth

The HTC Touch Dual capitalizes on a very loud audio experience (regional PR companies are going with the whole musical bandwagon via party, party, party) and this my friends is going to be the Dual’s main selling point. Truth be told I feel that the Touch Dual is an in-between release for the new HTC Diamond as it doesn’t really add anything new to the table. The TouchFlo interface is present, as this is a Touch device. It hasn’t really innovated since the early release of the Touch back in 2007.
What’s rather sad is that the O2 Stealth comes with WiFi and the Touch Dual doesn’t. Wow, two devices almost 2 years apart and this is what we get? Although to be fair, HTC did not manufacture the Stealth - it was made by their OEM competitor, Gigabyte.
Not a lot can be said about the Dual. It definitely got its real estate design right, and the screen is oh so bright, but the device lacks that sort of integration we were hoping for. It’s pretty much the same thing we’ve seen with the Stealth (which by the way did not get stellar reviews). Don’t get me wrong - the Touch Dual is still, all around, a decent phone for someone who has always wanted an up to date Windows Mobile device sporting a pseudo QWERTY thumb board and numerical keypad.

Philips X800 and X-Connect touchscreen phones go legit

Philips has recently announced its two iPhone like devices. The Philips X800 is a low end 2G GSM device with a 2.9 inch screen display, a 2 megapixels camera, microSD slot, Bluetooth, document reader and handwriting recognition. The Philips Xenium on the other hand is a high end UMTS/HSDPA device with Windows Mobile 6 and a 3 inch display. More coming on these soon...

Not one to string us along endlessly, Philips has 'fessed up to its pair of touchscreen phones, the X800 and the Xenium X-Connect. The X800 does it low-end with a 2.9-inch 240 x 400 screen, 2G GSM for data (no EDGE or WiFi!), a 2 megapixel camera, microSD slot and Bluetooth. Interestingly, the phone offers a documents reader and handwriting recognition, but this hardly seems to be that next do-it-all handheld you've been dreaming of, though the battery life is laudable. The Xenium X-Connect steps things up considerably, however, with Windows Mobile 6, UMTS and HSDPA, and a 3-inch display -- which hopefully sports a few more pixels. Still no WiFi, though, and other details like launch price and date are still slim.

Gold Plated Samsung SGH-D780 Official Phone For Russian Olympic Team

Russia is one of the strongest contenders in the coming Olympics in Beijing and Samsung has thought of the perfect marketing strategy by announcing a Gold Plated version of Samsung SGH-D780 as the official phone for the Russia Olympic team.

The Samsung SGH-D780 boasts 2 SIM card slots, a 2 megapixel camera, 2.1 inch QVGA screen, Bluetooth, FM Radio, microSD slot and a 1200 mAh battery. All in all it is a decent phone with shiny looks. It is expected to start selling in August.

It's a good marketing for handset makers to prepare the special edition phones for the Olympic Team of any country. When it comes to Russia, a golden phone is needed. And because the Olympics involve travelling to China this year, it's neat to have a device with two SIM card slots so you could use both the domestic number and the local Chinese number.

Hence, Samsung unveiled the special D780 DuoS Gold Plated edition as the official Russian Olympic Team phone. As far as we can tell, aside from the gold plating and the Olympics logo at the back, the special edition phone is pretty much the same as the original D780 Duos. That involves 2 SIM card slots, 2 megapixel camera, 2.1-inch QVGA screen, Bluetooth support, FM Radio, microSD memory card slot and a 1200 mAh battery. In a nutshell - it's a decent mid-range candybar which now shines more than it used to.

DMS002SH: Sharp’s New Walt Disney Phone does Cinderella

Disney is really picking on the merchandise - and who can blame them. With less than fantastic movies coming out for the big screen (Enchanted was good though), why not just concentrate on a completely odd competence: mobile phones.

In partnership with Sharp, Disney unveils their new line of phone collaborations. The theme for this series is Cinderella and here are the specs:

Clamshell design
50MB of internal memory // microSD slot
2.0MP camera
Bluetooth microSD slot
TV Tuner (editor’s note: this is an odd feature for this segment)
Three Cinderella color themes

Personally, if phones were to be labeled with the Disney brand, I’d want them to have big eyes and burst out into song at random moments.

Motorola RIZR Z10 hands on

The Motorola RIZR Z10 has been talked about on the Internet for quite some time now. Here are some photos of the unit I took in a briefing. The most peculiar thing about the phone is its unique design as you can see from the photos. The slider-candybar style allows half of the phone to bend to fit the contour of your face.

The RIZR is set to come out in Asia in the coming 2 to 3 months. I must reiterate that the real estate of the Z10, though unique is really more for the coolness factor. It’s also what makes the phone stand out as something more than a regular entry level phone. The RIZR Z10 handles video at 30 fps at QVGA MPEG4 format. Meant to be all video, you can edit your videos on the fly using the basic built in video editing software.

The phone comes with 90MB of user available memory but the expansion slot can be pushed up to 32GB of data.

Personally, the compelling factor of the Z10 is its unique shape. When taking videos, you must be able to shoot at a small tilt because, as you already know, the real estate bends when the slider is fully pulled out.

Sony Ericsson M600i

What do you get when you cross a Treo with a K750i?

Well, nothing still. But the closest match comes in a surprising little package. The M600i was recently announced by Sony Ericsson as the new candybar replacement for the P-series smartphones.

The Bluetooth functionality of the M600i in turn ties in with its media capabilities, which include the playback of MP3 and AAC formats as well as video at 30 FPS. Another highlight of the device is its dual function thumbboard, which - much like that of Palm’s Treo 700w - contains a numerical keypad with in its QWERTY layout, and is also enhanced by the presence of continuous spell checking and word completion. Other features related to input include a 3-way jog dial and handwriting recognition.

Another worthy addition to my list of would-have’s. I hate moving parts and this brick looks tough and elegant without becoming too much of a pocket sore.

HTC Dopod 838 mini review

Was talking to Carlo from The Unwired and he dropped by my office toting the new online OEM favorite, the HTC Dopod 838. He posted a mini-review which I would like to link you guys over to.

Performance-wise, the Dopod 838 can get along pretty well if you don’t forget to manage your memory well. Yes, it runs on an OMAP 850 processor which may seem a little underpowered at 195MHz. But upon startup or initialization things seems to settle well and the speed isn’t at all that bad. I’m so far happy with the battery life I’m getting which seems to get me about 2 days of usability even with BT on. The 1250mAh Li-ion battery seems to hold up well and with Wi-Fi on, a day’s work should be an easy chore for the 838.

The sliding keypad is slowly becoming a thing of the present and yes, it is indeed lovely. While Carlo was doing a short demo, he received an incoming phone call which perforated the air with a really really fricken loud speaker. It’s deafening.

Sony Ericsson T280i

The Sony Ericsson T280 will be available soon in Asia. This is an elegant candybar with a built in 1.3MP camera and Bluetooth. The T280 can be classified as a basic triband handset for those that don’t need a powerhouse device.

It is small, elegant in its finish and brings forth Bluetooth sync in your wireless headset. The phone has 10MB of built in memory but there is no mention of an expansion slot. It also does not support EDGE or 3G.

Two years ago, this would have been a top of the line handset for mobile warriors because of the Bluetooth capability. Today, it is considered to be one of Sony Ericsson’s entry level devices.

Sony Ericsson W980i

The W980i is the latest music phone from Sony Ericsson. The phone is of clamshell design and is basically the same thing we get from previous Walkman phones but with two updated features.

The first feature is the shake recognition via the built in accelerometer. I wrote about how these small pieces of hardware are going to change the way we use mobile phones - and yes, they are being implemented in creative ways with current mobile handsets. You can shake the W980i while pressing the Walkman key to skip to the next track.

The second feature of the W980i is the Track ID, something which I talked about here and is also being implemented as a feature called SongID with the new Motorola ROKR E8.

Apart from these features, the Sony Ericsson W980i will ship with HSDPA connectivity, video calling capabilities, and FM tuner.

Nokia E71 review

While Nokia makes a habit of practically defining "featurephone" for the industry, traditionally it's handsets like the N95 that hog all the spotlight, leaving Nokia's few QWERTY phones in the shadows. Not that they've been trying too hard -- while the E62 and E61i have both shipped over here, neither has featured 3G data in US bands, and the E62 even had the distinct pleasure of having WiFi stripped out. Enter E71, the successor to those phones, and Nokia's very first QWERTY device to feature US-friendly 3G.

Nokia is also (finally) taking form factor much more seriously: at 10mm thick, the E71 is one of the slimmest Nokia phones to date, and Nokia claims it's the thinnest QWERTY smartphone on the market. The E71 also attacks the drab, plastic looks of its predecessors with chrome accents and a glossy screen. The phone is incredibly pocketable, and comfortable to hold and use. Of course, with the smaller size Nokia had to cut down on screen real estate and keyboard spacing, but at a QVGA resolution there's little suffering on that front. The keyboard had a much more rigid, clicky feel to it compared to the spongy keys of the E62, and we were virtually typo-free on it within minutes.
With all this concentration on the exterior, Nokia hasn't forgotten the feature overload of old. The E71 includes A-GPS, WiFi, a 3.2 megapixel camera, A2DP Bluetooth, 110MB of built-in memory and a microSD slot. There's also plenty of software to take advantage of all that tech, thanks to the quite-mature S60 platform. It's running 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1, which lacks the screen transition fanciness of FP2, but seems much more stable and usable to us than its fresh-faced successor. Being a business centric device, the E71 comes with a full complement of office, email and PIM software, including a feature to switch on the fully between business and personal accounts, complete with separate mailboxes and home screens.

Nokia N85

What's the N85, you ask? We don't know a heck of a lot about this one, but we're told that it features a 5 megapixel camera, GPS, and geotagging -- sort of an N96 lite, perhaps.

The slider features the same industrial design featured on all of Nokia's Nseries devices as of late, but beyond that, your guess is as good as ours regarding target market, pricing, availability. Stay tuned for more as we get it!

Motorola MOTOROKR E8 hands-on

Like it or not, the combination of high-function media players with high-function cellphones is officially an inevitability (just ask Apple). It seems like every day a new handset's being announced with that obligatory 3.5mm headphone jack on board, one of the final pieces of the puzzle that had prevented phones from becoming legitimate PMP competitors for years. Motorola took this fusion particularly seriously with the ROKR E8, a slick little candybar announced at CES earlier this year, and we sat down with a China-spec model recently to see just how well it functioned as a full-time replacement for our dedicated music boxes -- and whether it could avoid losing its identity as a phone in the process.

In brief, we freaking loved it. The media player app was speedy, attractive, and logical, and sound quality was superb both through the jack and the integrated loudspeaker. The "touch arc" isn't quite as user-friendly as a full wheel is, but it gets the job done, and it's still leaps and bounds ahead of a traditional d-pad for managing large collections of tracks. The morphing keypad is very trick and we found the lit labels to be readable in pretty much any condition; unfortunately, there's not a lot of feel to them and clicking keys feels downright odd. More often than not, the only way we knew for sure that we'd managed to press a key was by looking at the screen for confirmation, which admittedly you're going to do anyway, but we still like a little tactile feedback to keep our fingers happy.
Combined with 3G and / or WiFi, the E8 would've been a great centerpiece in Moto's 2008 lineup, but the lack of any high-speed data saps all the fun out of tethering or browsing on the landscape display. For anyone just looking for a basic phone that's capable of outright replacing a Flash-based media player, though, the E8's got your number.

LG enV(2) graces Verizon tomorrow

Get those textin' thumbs ready, peeps, because your latest weapon of choice is just about ready for you. LG's enV(2)-- a phone that we'd argue takes attractive design far more seriously than its predecessor -- will be available in exchange for a reasonable sum of cash (or cash equivalent) tomorrow, April 30, in Verizon stores across the land. Far more than a mere text machine, the enV(2) features a 2 megapixel camera, microSD slot, GPS, and a big ol' 2.4-inch display when the clam is opened. The only question left, really, is black or maroon?

The new phone, revealed at CTIA WIRELESS 2008, features a sophisticated, slim redesign of the original enV by LG and will also be sold at Circuit City and online at www.verizonwireless.com.

RIM developing "Apple Killer" touchscreen BlackBerry?

The times has a verbose 2,000 word piece about the high stakes world of high-end cellphone manufacturers (no way!), specifically centered around RIM's post-iPhone trials and tribulations. Besides a bit of vague lip service paid to the 9000 series, they're claiming that two 3rd party developers -- no sources cited -- leaked that RIM has a skunkworks product dubbed "AK" (which stands for "Apple Killer"), and that apparently it'll be touchscreen. And then comes the tub-thumping money shot from co-CEO Mike Lazaridis: "I couldn't type on [the iPhone] and I still can't type on it, and a lot of my friends can't type on it. It's hard to type on a piece of glass." Right, until you guys decide to do one of your own -- these executive types are so transparent they might as well just be up front.

Philips M600

Looking more like an MP3 player than a phone, the Philips M600 (not to be confused with the ETEN M600 or the Sony Ericsson M600), the Philips M600 really shines with its music playback equipped with SRS Wow technology for “bigger” sound. It basically helps create a 3D audio environment by only using two speakers (stereo).

Here’s a rundown of the specs:

1.3MP camera
Bluetooth with A2DP support
microSD expansion
SRS Wow speakers with audio player supporting Midi (WTF!), WMA, MP3, AMR
Xenium 9@9 battery technology (over 40 hours of playback with a single charge)
3.5mm audio connector jack

So all in all, it really looks more like a kick-ass music player. The fact that it only supports up to GPRS will make you feel a bit wanting for more when it comes to data downloads. This isn’t a “world phone” by all means - it is going to be sold in China. I suspect upgraded versions to follow if this becomes a hit (and why shouldn’t it be — Philips is hot in China).

Samsung Armani Cellphone SGH-P520

Samsung Bang and Olufsen, the LG Prada and the Levis’ phone couture graced our desks.

At first glance, this is a looker a phone. Credit-card-sized exuding and chic in its chocolate-colored metallic paint. If we are in possession of an Armani suit you imagine that this would be quite in the bag, but it is as well to our M & S is the best.

The touch screen is what this phone. The design can be as slim as David Ginola’s coiffure, but the screen is so react, such as pressure and poking your grandfather Post-dinner and a little sherry on Christmas Day. Although Samsung has a haptic feedback user interface on the fan, the cheap thrill of a vibrating phone does not make up for the pain that is trying to send a message, surf the Internet or even to make a call. With the mini-2, 6 “as a tiny screen real estate to play their fingers to get past the dots menu lets you feel that Imagine, you won the Track and Field 100m sprint.

If you have the patience a blind patch-work quilt maker, and manage to trudge through the menu of the camera on this blower is over par. The packaging of the 3MP camera and an LED flash to boot, it is not as impressive as some of the snappers Samsung has recently churning, but there is another fashion mobile cameras on the market. Save your pictures on the 60MB memory of the user or blow in a 2-GB Micro SD card for a few bonus grey matter. ”

The music player is not bad. Sync with Windows Media Player 11 on your PC and use the included Samsung PC Studio to organize your tracks: drag-and-drop on the memory card of your phone, and you have your tunes. The tone is not sonic gold, but it is quite good, even with the in-box-ear phones. If you want to insert in your own cans you need an adapter. Giorgio clearly does not like, if you mess with his style.

Under the beautiful styling and the chassis designer Armani fan is a fairly average handset. Missing 3G and with a touch-screen irritating, it is more boring than primary Armani.
